Eat Your Heart Out, Tovah

I (TOVAH) am playing a short set at the EYAOJG queer arts festival in Saskatoon on February 11th, 2012. This'll probably be the last time I play in this city for a long time so cum say, fuck off!

"CFCR host suspended for Twitter blunder"

This is not Chris Brinklow, this is Jon Stewart -- in case you didn't know.

This Chris Brinklow dude's a real idiot! He's still arguing the merits of his 'jokes' on Twitter. Since when did misogyny, fatphobia, and retard jokes become 'edgy'? Because I'm pretty certain they're just an indicator of ignorance.

This is what anger looks like

After escaping physical and aggressive unwanted sexual advances by three men Saturday night, and then all of that misogynist 'whore' talk, victim blaming, and slut shaming bullshit today; I'm about to lose my shit. More than I have already.

I'll hate fuck you and your victim shaming so hard, that you'll never forget - "dead men don't rape".

OBSESSED

with One Hundred Dollars these days. I do have a small confession to make though.

What a bunch of fuckin' babes and all around good folk!

I burnt their most recent album Songs of Man from CFCR and hardly listened to it cuz I didn't really care for it at first. In fact, I may or may not have referred to their album as a "snoozefest". Wellwellwell, was I ever wrong! I had the great pleasure of seeing them twice this past Halloween weekend and can't stop listening and internet stalking them. Simone, the lead singer, is such an enigma to me and I'm totally crushin' hard.

Oh yeah, they're playing with the Seahags in Bruno on November 9th, 2011, on their way back to Toronto. Do you think it's excessive and creepy for me to drive all the way to Bruno to see them again? I can just use the Seahags as an excuse, right?

Check them out here if you can:

Mind Your Own Business

I especially love reading people's reactions/descriptions of Aunty Panty.

POP Montreal - "A kick in the nuts from the prairies, Saskatoon's riot grrrl duo Aunty Panty tear their way through jangly minimal trash punk. Don’t miss this beautifully brutish collision of throat-wrenching shrieks, panties and steamed wieners."

Ominocity - "Midway through watching Aunty Panty’s new video for the song “Panty Stain”, I realized I was strangely – albeit delightfully – freaked out. The song itself is a ratchety clatter of weirdo punk noise – sort of like trying to carry a wayward feral cat into your house and getting a claw in the kisser for your efforts."

Weird Canada - "Scanner-destroying sans-wave from the antagonizing wastelands of Saskatoon. Aunty Panty’s digital halo debut is a dualic descent into derelict guitar destruction and vocal annihilation. Hammered strikes against their metallic strings clangor amongst the concrete waves of red-lined vocals and four-four drummery. A severe peak into the marginalized sounds running rampant in our wheat-filled prairies."

Glass Popcorn

I was scouring the world.wide.web last night for some new music and news articles to discuss on Rainbow Radio. I happened to find a track by Glass Popcorn about Tim McLean, the guy who was beheaded in 2008 on a Greyhound bus traveling through Manitoba. I was curious about this Glass Popcorn person and eventually discovered that he's a 15 y/o pseudo internet celebrity from Arizona that was 'discovered' by one of the co-founders of dump.fm (I used to WASTE a lot of time on dump). Anyway, I pursued this mess a little further and then hit the jackpot with this video.

Bam!

Vive is moving again! After a great year of quality shows at Jale
(Caffe Sola), Vive is leaving for greener pastures. The cafe requires more space for their growing business and is expanding throughout the upper level of the building. The current Jale space will no
longer be available to Vive as of the beginning of September.

This has given Vive the opportunity to further explore performance
space options in Saskatoon. We are re-grouping now and planning to
re-emerge with a new physical space in the spring of 2012.

To fund the move, storage, and help us towards the next phase (Vive
3.0), we are hosting a Vive fundraiser slash grand closing party on
Sat September 3rd, 2011 @ Jale.

Vive will continue hosting shows through the fall and winter at the
Roxy Theatre, Walker's, the two-twenty, and even a few house shows. The Jale move will not affect vf4 (planning is underway).

Thanks for your support and dedication to Saskatoon's music
scene and to Vive music.

Pudgy Pool Party

In light of all the ignorant comments I've been seeing/hearing about 'fat girls in bikinis' lately, I propose a Pudgy Pool Party in protest.

Let's reject conventional beauty ideals that cause so many people to feel insecure and ashamed of their bodies, by lallygagging in our prettiest swim attire at Riversdale swimming pool.

NoBODY should feel ashamed about their body.

Braceface? Bellyrolls? Pegleg? Skinnymini? etc...

Let's all come together to celebrate diversity and encourage positive body images in all forms.

Pluuuuuussss this is a real good excuse to hang-out with rad peeps, and eat treats pool-side, yo! I'm gonna make a quinoa dish and some bruschetta and guacamole to eat with some fresh white bread, cheese, and crackers/chips! I'll also probably bring some freshly picked strawberries from the Strawberry Ranch too!

Lez eat!

Stylus Magazine

Aunty Panty and Lipstickface were both recently reviewed in Winnipeg's 'Stylus Magazine'. Read the reviews here. Also, our bff Ryan is playing synths for Austra right now, and they're new album 'Feel It Break' was also reviewed. How exciting!

Aunty Panty's going on a little Alberta/Saskatchewan tour starting in Calgary on Thursday July 7th, 2011. Check here for tour dates. We'll be playing with Nu Sensae and White Lung in Saskatchewan. Uhhhhhh, what or what!?

Jigsaw Youth

Slutwalk Saskatoon - Notice the atrocious comments left by the commentators!? Jesus, looks like my job as a radical-homo-slut's gonna keep on, keepin' on for a loooong time. I'll fucking spit my menstrual blood in the face of your ignorant patriarchy, assholes!

White Boy-Bikini Kill (mp3)
Spoken:
I don't think it's a problem, cause most of the girls ask for it.

Uh huh, how did they ask for it?

The way they act, the way they...I...I can't say the way they dress because that's their own personal choice. Some of these dumb hoes, those slut rocker bitches walking down the street, they're asking for it, they may deny it but it's true.

Lay me spread eagle out on your hill, yeah
Then write a book bout how I wanted to die
It's hard to talk with your dick in my mouth
I will try to scream in pain a little nicer next time

White Boy
Don't laugh
Don't cry
Just die

I'm so sorry if I'm alienating some of you
Your whole fucking culture alienates me
I can not scream from pain down here on my knees
I'm so sorry that I think!

White Boy
Don't laugh
Don't cry
Just die

Aunty Panty w/ Deadhorse and GreyOwl

Deadhorse (Garage / Psychedelic / Rock)
"From an opening salvo of echoed psychedelia through to glammy garage stompers, Neil Young-ian ditch rock and spooky roots music of all stripes, the debut album from Calgary’s Deadhorse proves this troupe is no one-trick pony. Formed from the ashes of orchestral-folk collective The Consonant C, the last few years found the band of outsiders clip-clopping ...along until local label Saved By Vinyl leapt onboard to release its gloriously raw self-titled LP."

Aunty Panty (Experimental / Religious / Visual)
Aunty Panty was birthed from the cottage cheese thighs of Edith Massey and left on a witch's doorstep. After a much needed bathroom break Aunty Panty is back, baby.

Greyowl (psych / rock)
Grey Owl is inspired by all things obscure, you will hear many different influences in the music, from Japanese noise rock to African traditional music. Expect lots of synth with a heavy emphasis on drone music, with use of vocal loops and avant garde melody. Pop gone wrong.

The yaya youth series is presented with the support of The Saskatchewan Arts Board and Caffe Sola.

If You Liked It Then/Than You Should Have Put A Ring On It

Unless you have a really good excuse, you should come to Amigos tomorrow (Thursday March 24th, 2011) night for the Diamond Rings and PS I Love You show. If you don't, you're a fool. Just sayin'.

Saskatoon Shines

If you live in Saskatoon and care at all about good music and art, please consider suppourting Vive.

In 2007, Phil and Rich shared a vision for a new music promotion company. It would be a venture dedicated to encouraging the talented depth and diversity of Saskatoon's music community. This entity would provide a stage for friends and artists that they admire. It would live outside of the establishment, taking risks, doing away with divisions, and in the end be a vehicle for excessive fun. In 2008, these two local show-goers began making it a reality. Early discussions lasted into the night over wine and pitas. What do we want this thing to look like? What should it be called? The pieces fell naturally into place as they tend to do when it's just meant to be...they call it vive. Their initial project involved support for The Warbrides, a trio from Moose Jaw whose skill and finesse caused a shift for vive, in terms of perspective, from consumer to promoter. Next was a singer songwriter series called Off the Floor, a project conceived for music listeners in small, quiet rooms. These are raw, solo, and bare shows designed for sonic intimacy. It's early days and the future is unwritten. However, it is sure to contain more than a few new surprises. And who doesn't like a really good surprise anyway?

Right now Vive's hard at work putting together ViveFest 3.
