Oh my tender, tender, tender, heart.

I just got home from watching TOMBOY at the Broadway Theatre. Everyone should see it if they can. There is so much depth and tenderness contained in this film - I was lovestruck and homotional all the way through. The cinematography and acting were astounding too, and there are few things I find more charming than children speaking French.

"In 'Tomboy', filmmaker Céline Sciamma’s ('Water Lilies') second feature, a family with two daughters, 10-year-old Laure and 6-year-old Jeanne, moves to a new suburban neighborhood during the summer holidays. With her Jean Seberg haircut and tomboy ways, Laure is immediately mistaken for a boy by the local kids, and decides to pass herself off as “Mikael,” a boy different enough to catch the attention of leader of the pack Lisa, who becomes smitten. At home with her parents and girlie younger sister, she is Laure: hanging out with her new pals and girlfriend, she is Mikael. Finding resourceful ways to hide her true self, Laure takes advantage of her new identity, as if the end of the summer would never reveal her unsettling secret. Céline Sciamma brings a light and charming touch to this contemporary coming-of-age story, which is also about relationships between children, children and parents, and the even more complicated one between one’s heart and body."

Gender vs Sex

There are few things that bother me more than the misuse of the word 'gender'. It's ignorant, and it's gag inducing. Understanding 'gender' is not like studying the theories of quantum physics. Everybody can understand the idea of 'gender', the problem is, not everyone will accept it. If you don't like gender fucking, don't do it, but there's no justifying the oppression of people who are gender variant.

The IAAF has given new meaning to the term "governing body." The organization, which oversees track and field internationally, has asked the South African athletics federation to conduct a gender verification exam on the nation's running sensation, Caster Semenya, who Wednesday won the 800-meter event at the World Championships in Berlin. Results won't be available for several weeks, apparently because gender verification has become much more intricate than it was in 1968, when the International Olympic Committee first called for such tests.

gender outlaw

When I started this blog, I vowed to myself that I would post regularly. Publish all the things that I cared about it. So far, I haven't yet realized that goal. I could list all the excuses (In my defense, blogger.com sometimes crashes my web browser) but instead, will try and summarize what I've been up to in the past little while.

As I lay in bed naked, middle of the afternoon, on an EDO (earned day off) from work, I take time to delight in all the good feelings that are starting to surface. A new found energy that's provoked when the sun shines brightly at 8:30am. Winter is always hard for me and I can't help that I love it too. So as I sit here and mourn another passing of winter, I am most certainly ready for spring to begin.

Today is a good day, an exceptionaly good day. Today I will get to see Kate Bornstein speak at Breaking The Silence, a conference taking place at the University of Saskatchewan.

I remember the feelings I had when I started reading about gender theory. I was a little baby queer, still in high school, trying to understand who I was. I always understood the binary that existed in being a lesbian. I often felt suffocated by it. Butch or Femme. Pick one. I didn't want to pick one. I wasn't either, I was neither. I was me. A 'gender outlaw'.
It wasn't until after high school that I really started understanding gender theory and Kate Bornstein was one of the first theorists to open my eyes. So for that, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to her. Thank-you Kate!!!
